The famous Roman Opera House is located 700 meters from Hotel Canova.
This legendary Roman theater is dedicated to opera and ballet and has a capacity of approximately 2,200 people. It was designed by architect Achille Sfondrini and commissioned by Domenico Costanzi. The Opera Houseopened in November 27, 1880 with the opera "Semiramide" by Rossini. The King and Queen of Italy were present at this performance.
In 1926, the City of Rome bought the theater and took over the management. Over the years, the best composers and musicians in the world have been featured at the Opera House: Pietro Mascagni, Giacomo Puccini, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Riccardo Zandonai. In addition to the first alternated memorable performance as "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart in 1964 and "Don Carlo" by Giuseppe Verdi staged in 1965 and directed by Carlo Maria Giulini and directed by Luchino Visconti.
The theater also offers its corps de ballet and dance school.. On April 9, 1917 the "first" Italian performance of "The Firebird" by Igor Stravinsky, performed by the company Ballets Russes Company of Sergei Diaghilev occurred at the Opera House.
During July and August, the Opera House conducts a summer outdoors in the beautiful surroundings of the archaeological complex of the Baths of Caracalla.
