Trajan’s Forum

Trajan’s Forum, the largest Roman forum, is just a 1 km walk from Hotel Canova.

Trajan’s Forum was built between 107 and the year of triumph over the Dacians, 113 AD. Opened in 112 A.D.

In order to erect the huge complex, because insufficient space remained free, the slpes of the Quirinal and Capitoline Hill were altered.

The work was carried out by Apollodorus of Damascus, a military engineer who had accompanied the emperor in the victorious war.

The huge complex at various times was used to hold public ceremonies and to honor famous people.

When Trajan died, his ashes, along with those of his wife Plotina, were buried inside the hollow base of the Trajan Column, which is located in the Forum of Trajan, in a small courtyard behind the Basilica of Ulpia.
